About the Fort Stockton Chamber of Commerce
What exactly is the chamber of commerce? The mission of the Chamber of Commerce shall be twofold - to promote and encourage the business development of the City of Fort Stockton and the surrounding area; and to use all practical and available resources to improve and enhance the quality of life of all citizens of the area.
History of The Chamber of Commerce
The Fort Stockton Chamber of Commerce has been running strong since March of 1920. Like any competitive business, the Chamber has changed and will continue to reshape its goals in order to adequately meet the needs of the membership and community.
We continue to be an association organized for the protection and promotion of commerce. Perhaps, if there was not such a thing as a "Chamber" an evolution might occur by a group of businessmen and community leaders realizing the need for someone to stand up for their concerns, promote their products and service their needs.
The emergence of the Chamber as a true community organization developed as business began to realize their own prosperity depended on the development of a thriving, healthy and happy community. Basically, the Chamber has evolved to be a vehicle through which business people work together to define and solve problems and facilitate improvements.
The Membership
The Chamber is designed to allow varying sizes and types of businesses, individuals, industries, financial institutions or civic organizations to become a member. These members, in turn, are the real owners of the Chamber because of their financial (and time!) investments. As a result, we consider the members as our "clients". Consequently, we service our clients by promoting and servicing their needs, which in turn meets the needs of our community.
Currently, our membership is 250 strong with each member having the opportunity to vote on a Board of Directors. In turn, the boards of directors volunteer their time to set policies, create a vision, oversee the financial, establish guidelines for the staff and assist in special projects, committees and task forces. As business and community needs change, the Board and staff will establish specific task forces and committees to accomplish certain goals. The common thread that runs throughout each committee and project is to create more dollars for more people and to improve the economic welfare of our community. |
