At noon today (Thursday, March 19), Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued an executive order regarding the public health disaster. Abbott explained during a press conference that the executive orders will bring the entire state of Texas in line with CDC guidelines to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
During a news conference at the state Capitol, Abbott announced the executive order that covered four main points:
-
Prohibiting social gatherings of more than 10 people.
-
No dining-in at restaurants, food courts or bars. However, drive-throughs, pick-up, and delivery options are allowed and highly encouraged. All gyms are ordered to close as well.
-
Prohibiting visits to nursing homes, retirement homes or long-term care facilities except to provide care for patients.
-
All schools in the state will be temporarily closed, but education should continue through alternative means such as online.
The orders take effect at midnight Friday, March 20 and will go through midnight on Friday, April 3, and may be extended depending on the status of COVID-19 in Texas or by the recommendations of the CDC.
This is NOT a shelter-in-place declaration - people may go to grocery stores, banks, parks etc while adhering to item 1 above. All essential services will remain in place. The governor asks that all employers have only essential staff come in to work, and others to work remotely wherever possible.
