  It takes a lot of planning and hard work to build a small business. If you're an owner, you've probably put a lot of thought into how to market your product or service, your competition, and your balance sheet. But have you thought about what will happen to your business when you are no longer running it?
  Maybe your plan is to pass the business on to your family, assuming that they have the desire and know-how to manage it without you. Or maybe your thought is to sell it, assuming that you have a willing buyer when you want to sell. More often than not, however, it's the unplanned events - financial hardship, disability, or sudden death - that can ruin the business you've worked so hard to create.
  A succession plan is like a road map for the survival of your business into the future. It sets forth what you want to happen to your business after a particular event. It could be planned, like your retirement, or unplanned - sudden death or incapacity, or an economic downturn. Without a plan, family conflicts about management and ownership could end in business failure. A succession plan gives you a say in the future of your business instead of leaving it up to chance. It gives you peace of mind!
